Just Cruisin’

It’s always great to hear stories of people getting to actually live their dreams, so we thought we would share with you a little story about one of our previous clients.

Well known Esperance identities, Fud and Faye Mackenzie, commissioned the Cat Factory to build their dream boat late 2007. Experienced sailors as they were, they knew exactly what kind of boat would be the best choice for their circumnavigation of Australia. Their choice was the Fusion 40 Sailing Catamaran which they had fitted out comprehensively to manage long distance cruising performance with comfort. “Fayze Too II” was launched in July 2008.

Fayze Too II at sailWe spoke to Fud & Faye recently, 3 weeks after they set sail on their dream trip around Australia. Their itinerary is ambitious but they have plenty of time as they plan to complete the trip in stages over the next three years. Right now they aim to be through the Bass Straight by May and then head north to the sun.

When asked it they thought their fitout was adequate for the journey, their response was “perfect”. Top 5 aspects of the boat were:

  1. Extremely easy for the two of them to handle in any of the sailing conditions they have met.
  2. Sailing performance brilliant – they are making better than expected time.
  3. The Fusion’s stability in the water, even in the heavy swells of the southern ocean, was making the journey a pleasure.
  4. Masses of storage available – in fact they still have two cupboards empty!
  5. Space, Space, Space..for living, there is no way this boat will ever feel cramped, even though there are only two of them now, there will still be plenty of space when friends and family join them at different stages.

For other prospective cruisers..

Fud’s top tip:
“Don’t scrimp on the navigation gear – for long cruising you need a good quality, comprehensive package.”

Faye’s top tip:
“Go galley up…it’s so great to be part of everything & if you need to be on deck quickly you don’t have far to go.”

Thanks Fud and Faye and Bon Voyage!
